The official day of love is rounding the corner, rushing towards us full steam ahead. Valentine’s day, the slightly out of control, emotionally unstable little sister of the Calendar. Valentine’s day, the slightly out of control, emotionally unstable little sister of the Calendar. Either you embrace this obnoxious holiday with open arms giving into all things red, pink and heart-shaped, or you cringe at the entire concept. Many people see it as a holiday for those who are in love, and I guess that is what the whole thing is supposed to be about. However, I have to admit some of the best Valentines days that I have enjoyed have been spent with friends or even by myself.
Regardless of how you spend the day or who you typically spend it with, single or in a relationship or married for 50 years, I think it is important to not forget to send some love to yourself. Is that selfish of me? I don’t think so… this Valentine’s day don’t forget to do something special for yourself and give yourself the appreciation you deserve.
If you are like me maybe you are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of eating healthy and the importance of exercise. The days are fading where I could wake up and eat a chocolate bar, but just because you may know 20 different ways to make quinoa doesn’t mean that cheesecake isn’t still making you drool. So this Valentines day I urge you to think long and hard (or not so long and hard) about the one thing you would love to eat but always say “no I shouldn’t” From there I encourage you to buy that slice of evil deliciousness whatever it may be and…. stuff your face.

This could be anything, that new nail polish you got for Christmas but never used, a yoga class, a crafting class, you name it. I think there is no better way to love yourself than to treat yourself with something that you have always wanted to do but always made excuses. Worried that no one will want to do that painting class with you? Go forth and do it yourself, after all why not hang out with yourself for a few hours doing something you have truly wanted to do. No excuses just do it.
Leggings and giant sweaters everyday of the week are kind of my go to, and although comfy I don’t always feel “pretty” while wearing this. Dressing up for yourself is a awesome way to send some love your way. When you look good you feel good, so they say. So grab those heels, or tight jeans, that expensive makeup you only wear during a night out and throw it all on. Or just grab a shower, whatever is more your speed. You don’t have to have cool plans to do these things, you just need yourself.
Being mindful is a tool that us westerners are beginning to really take a interest in. The benefits of mindfulness when it comes to self-love is endless. This Valentines day remember to be mindful. Take notice of all of the small things in your day that brings you happiness and you are grateful for. I am grateful for my snuggly bed, I am grateful for my safe warm home, I am grateful for my selection of shoes. Your life is surrounded by things that brings you happiness, why else would they be in your life? Remember those beautiful people, places, and things.
What is your favorite thing to do? I love reading, coloring is a new favorite hobby, going for a hike. If you are stuck for plans or unsure of a way to spend Valentine’s day look no further than what you would ordinarily do. Spend some time enjoying that activity to the fullest and indulge in your most mundane wishes.
If you live somewhere with terrible weather or where it is freezing cold all winter like I do then you may be missing the fresh air and the great outdoors. Nature and fresh air have been proven to improve your mood, calm your mind and help you think more clearly. So if the weather permits, go outside, go skiing, skating or simply take a stroll through the park. Once you are out in the crisp air your senses are bound to take over and fill you with happiness.
Run a hot bath, break out your most comfortable onesie or fuzzy blanket and just relax. Life is so busy and hectic that it can sometimes be difficult to just check out and do nothing. You deserve to sleep in for an extra hour or to wear your pajamas all day or binge watch your favorite TV show on Netflix. Feel no guilt just sit back and enjoy the simple things. No judgment, no obligations.
While you are getting ready for your day, or cooking breakfast turn on some music. Listen to the nostalgic tunes of your teenage years or your latest obsessions. Music has a huge impact on our moods so why not fill your home with the sounds of something that you love?
If you are really getting into the self-love spirit then writing yourself a love letter might be the perfect way to send yourself love this valentines day. All too often we are so focused on sending love to other people, giving them words of love and thankfulness for their importance in our lives. Yes, this is important, I love my mother, my friends, my boyfriend. However sending love to yourself is something that I think we can all benefit from. Write a note to yourself, read it and throw it away, or keep it to read when your feeling blue. It doesn’t matter the use, just this act of practicing kindness towards yourself is all the love you need.
Happy love day to all of you beautiful readers. I would love to read your love notes to yourself so if you feel like blogging one please send me the link in the comments below.
How will you be sending love to yourself this Valentine’s day?
