My Simple 10 Step Self Care Morning Routine

Hi there, welcome back!

Self-care is something I love to explore and write about. When I have time/need a pick me up I make a conscious effort the night before to start the next day in the best way possible.

Having a self-care morning routine can and will set up your day and spirit to be the best it can be. Starting the day with the intention to take care of yourself will go a long way. Often times it may be hard to find the time for myself during the work week or even the weekend and do all of these self-care things I like to do. However, I recently realized that all I need is one hour.

Just one-hour all for me in the morning time to help myself feel good all day long. That’s worth waking up early for, don’t ya think?

Check out my self-care morning routine here and start thinking about creating one of your own. Lots of love.summer deals!.jpg

Step 1:

Wake up early: This allows me the time I need to give myself that little bit of extra self-care in the morning. For me waking up early means one hour before work as I have a short work commute and no kiddos.

(Do not check your phone). I am adding do not check your phone in here because as soon as you turn it on your brain is being subjected to thousands of images and ideas, negative and positive. It is not the most gentle way to start your day. So I like to give myself some time before checking my social media, email or texts.

Step 2:image1 (1)

Wash my face: I use the Pacifica Kale face wash which I love as it smells like fresh green things and then I like to dab on my Fresh deep hydration moisturizer which reminds me of
rose gardens. Lastly, while my imagination is filled with images of me frolicking in some remote exotic fancy place I put on some lip balm.

This mini skin care routine not only wakes me up, but it prepares me or a fresh new day by putting a smile on my face straight away. It’s almost like a mini spa treatment. Yay!

Step 3:image3.JPG

Make a coffee or tea: Having something warm and brewing it in the morning gives me that little bit of extra motivation to start my day. While my coffee is brewing I chug a full glass of cold water to hydrate myself.

Step 4:

Write in my gratitude journal: I use my The Five Minute Journal: A Happier You in 5 Minutes a Day but any journal will do. The way it works is you write three things that you are grateful for and three things you are looking forward to happening or doing that day (Things within your control). Writing in the journal is the image21.jpgperfect way to start the day with the right positive mindset. I usually drink my coffee while I write. So cozy.

Step 5:

Yoga time: I like to turn on a short Yoga with Adriene video on the old youtube. Doing yoga for even just 10 minutes in the morning is an awesome way to get everything loosened up and stretched out. Doing this has done wonders for my body, especially because I spend the majority of my day sitting.

Step 6:

Meditate: After yoga, I like to sit and meditate for at the very least 10 minutes. If you are new to meditation you can check out my book suggestions here. Sometimes I like to listen to a guided meditation which you can easily find on Youtube, and other times I just sit with my breath. This is an awesome spiritual practice to incorporate into your morning, and you will see wonderful long term benefits if you can manage to make it a part of your daily life.

Step 7:

Breakfast time: I know many people like to eat as soon as they wake up, however, I just don’t feel hungry right away so I usually save the grub for after meditation. I often grab something light like cereal on the weekdays and if I am feeling particularly wild I may cut up some apples and make waffles on the weekend. Yum!

Step 8:

Turn on some music or youtube: I like to turn on some tunes or one of my favorite Youtubers as I get ready. It’s nice to have some background atmosphere going to get me pumped for the day.

Step 9:

Pick out my OOTD: Many people swear by picking out their outfit the night before, and although I must admit I usually have a good idea of what I want to wear before I shut my eyes, I usually have to wait for a little while before I know what kind of mood I am in. It is usually a good one after the first bit of my morning routine. Dressing for my mood is key for me, as some days I feel like being comfy and others I like to dress up more. You feel me?

Step 10:

Makeup time: I am fairly minimal with my makeup, but again this depends on my mood. Its really the smile that matters anyway.

There you have it my morning self-care routine. Believe it or not, this all only takes me about one hour to do. When I take the time to actually take care of myself in the mornings my whole outlook on the day is dramatically different.

If you would like to see a self-care night time routine or my current makeup favorites please leave a comment below.

Ready? Let’s go! It is time to say goodbye to the sanctuary of home sweet home and head out into the world. See you on the outside my beautiful friends!

LOVE !! I am so passionate about advocating for self-care. For me, my morning routine is coffee and getting up early enough so I’m not rushed!

    • StephJ | 28th Apr 17

Not feeling rushed is key! I am terrible for sleeping in then rushing around, it stresses me out.

  4. caffeinatedcarly | 28th Apr 17

I love these!! Especially the idea of journaling. I also would benefit from staying off of my phone first thing in the morning. Thanks for the list!

    • StephJ | 28th Apr 17

Thank you! Glad you liked it. I try my best to stay away from my phone and ease into my day, but like everyone I can be guilty from time to time.

Breakfast is a must!I can certainly tell the difference when I don’t eat in the mornings-it makes me feel so much more sluggish.

    • StephJ | 28th Apr 17

It is so true. I find my whole day is thrown off when I dont have at least something small in the morning.

  6. Colors of my life | 28th Apr 17

Awesome list but need loads of self discipline, once done it will be life changer.

    • StephJ | 28th Apr 17

I struggle with making this a priority but when I do I feel great 🙂

      • Colors of my life | 28th Apr 17

That’s why said, it’s difficult to make a discipline. But one does than its awesome, however some hanky panky is allowed 😀

Morning routines are the single most important part of working towards your goals… When you have more perfect days, reaching your goals is easy.

I tell you – the struggle is real!! I have been just getting up right before I need to take one kid to the bus and then two others to care for after… They wake up early too. Your post is so encouraging and it is amazing how you can get so much done in that amount of time – and how it really makes a positive on your day.

    • StephJ | 29th Apr 17

Thanks! It really helps me start my day right. I really believe even 10 minutes will make a difference. 😊

  11. Krista Bel | 28th Apr 17

I think I need to add the ‘don’t check your phone’ part although it’s hard since I work from my phone

    • StephJ | 29th Apr 17

In that case taking some time for yourself is even more important! 😊

  12. the happiest pixel | 29th Apr 17

Love your ideas!! I don’t have a good morning routine yet, but it’s something I want to have…Thanks for the inspiration!!
    Love, thp

    • StephJ | 29th Apr 17

I think if you are looking out for your needs and what makes you feel good it will naturally come together 😊

      • the happiest pixel | 29th Apr 17

I’ll try it, it would be lovely to have a nice morning routine! Thanks!! 🙂

This is such a nice routine and I love to read this type of post so I would love to read about your night routine and makeup favorites!! I love that you don’t immediately check your phone after waking up, I’m guilty of doing that. This is great inspiration, thank you so much!! xx

    • StephJ | 29th Apr 17

Thanks girl! I also love reading these kinds of posts and watching videos on YouTube. I think a nighttime routine would be fun. Thanks again for the support ❤️

  14. Oriana | 30th Apr 17

Great care routine ! I should inspire myself from this, most of time I just do it all in 15 min because I wake up late… not as relaxing as yours 😅

    • StephJ | 30th Apr 17

Most times I only have a few minutes too. 😀

  15. thebeasley | 30th Apr 17

    Nice. Like this routine.

  16. Glaiza Binayas | 30th Apr 17

I really have to practice not checking my phone right after I wake up. 🙌

I love this! What a brilliant idea (including writing it down). I’ve discovered a couple of things that I love to do to start my day: have a mug of coffee, take it over to my little meditation table beside my meditation cushion, and meditate for 20 minutes to an hour. I always feel wonderful when I begin my day like this. I felt wonderful just reading your ten steps. I am going to experiment with more steps that are feel good for the beginning of the day, and, like you, I am going to write the ones I want to keep down.

    • StephJ | 1st May 17

Oh awesome! i would love to be able to meditate for as hour in the morning. How relaxing that must be. 🙂

  18. Binging on Beetroot | 4th May 17

This is such an important post! When I take care of myself and don’t let myself feel grumpy and “meh” in the morning, the day seems so much brighter!

    • StephJ | 4th May 17

So true! Yesterday morning I woke up early and did a little self care and today I didn’t. I felt like yesterday was so much more pleasant and full. When will I ever learn to follow my own advice. LOL

  19. Emily Frigo, The Midwest Minimalist | 8th May 17

This is similar to my morning routine. It’s amazing how much more happy and productive our days are when we wake up early and take care of ourselves a bit before taking care of other people and tasks!

  20. Helen | 15th May 17

I keep trying to get up early and take care of myself in the morning, but I am just not a morning person. I need to figure it out because it’s such valuable time I spend sleeping.

    • StephJ | 15th May 17

Once you start doing it it will become a new habit in no time. Automatically brewing my coffee always gets me up and ready.

  21. lecypoore | 15th May 17

These are great tips. I love the idea of washing your face as soon as you get out of bed. It’s a great way to ensure you pull yourself out of sleep!

    • StephJ | 15th May 17

So true! It wakes me up and makes me feel fresh!

  22. Yentl | 15th May 17

Love this! I started to slow down my mornings this year and it has made an incredible difference in my mindset and energy for the day:)

    • StephJ | 16th May 17

Yes it really does! I am always in such a rush in the mornings, waking up an hour early has made a big difference for me too. When I remember to do it 🙂

  23. CJ | Thirty30Courtney.com | 15th May 17

I have a much better morning experience when I plan out my outfits on Sunday. I usually go with 6 / 7 because moods can definitely change, I can feel bloated, and I want to have backup. I usually get my tea / coffee when I get to work, but maybe I should make it before I leave my apartment.

    • StephJ | 16th May 17

I think I might try doing that some Sunday. I like your idea of having 6 outfits chosen, that is a good plan!

  24. Chelsea Pearl | 17th May 17

Self care is so important and I’m definitely feeling inspired after seeing your routine. Definitely want to incorporate daily meditation into my routine as well.

    • StephJ | 17th May 17

That would be awesome! I think you will really enjoy it.

I’ve also been waking up early to spend a few minutes on the mat with Adriene! It makes a big difference to have that time to myself to wake up and get my body moving. A warm cup of tea is also a lovely way to wake up 😊
