Self-Care Gift Guide

My approach to buying gifts for those I care about has changed a lot over the past few years.

As an overthinker, you can bet that I overthink the shit out of gift buying. Which I guess isn’t entirely bad. I find myself pondering things like… will this better their life? Will it bring them happiness? Is this a gift that will make them a better person in some way? Will it bring a smile to their face each time they see it or use it?

Maybe it is just me, but I would rather spend my money on something personalized, that helps improve someone’s life, or helps to add joy, rather than waste my money on trinkets, trends, and fads.

This is why I wanted to create a different kind of gift guide for myself and for all of you. A guide to help inspire you to give the gift of self-care, self-improvement, and comfort to your loved ones and maybe even to yourself.

Cheers!

For the mind

Books

As someone who loves to read I honestly can’t think of a better gift to receive than a good book. Have you ever been reading a book and think that a certain person you know would love it? I believe that books are the most thoughtful gifts.

Give one of your personal favorites to a friend to help share the magic you enjoyed while reading it yourself. Or for some inspiration check out some of my book recomendations of the past.

Quotes

Never underestimate the power of words. Buy your friend or family member a pillow, wall decal or photo of an inspirational quote to add motivation and positivity to their life. Kind words are so uplifting and a great tool for manifesting.

A Journal

A journal is a great gift for the blogger, writer or self-reflecting introvert on your shopping list. I personally love having notebooks and the more the marrier. Making a great stocking stuffer or gift to go with that beautiful book you picked out.

Yearly Planner

With bullet journals becoming increasingly popular and many people trying to get back to the basics of organization by ditching their phones for a paper planner, this is a fun gift for the super organized or busy person on your Christmas list. We all have that one friend right?

For the soul

Headspace app

This app is filled with awesome meditations ranging in skill level, mood, and time frames.Making the perfect gift for anyone expressing a desire to start a meditation practice. Or someone who frequently mediates already.  Maybe even you?

You can check this app out for free and then purchase a year subscription for yourself or someone you care for.

Meditation cushion

With meditation becoming more popular this is a great gift for the zen master in your life. This is a gift that is a need, a want, and a kind and thoughtful gift also. There are plenty of options on amazon.com or samadhicushions.com.

Meditation retreat

Whether you meditate or not a retreat is something everyone can benefit from. Check out your local events and find a retreat in your own area. Buy a weekend away for you and a friend, family member or partner and share a truly enriching experience together.

Music

Am I the only person who listens to CDs anymore? If you or someone you know likes listening to tunes then buy them their favorite band’s new cd or an iTunes gift card.

Crystals

More and more people are becoming interested in the world of natural healing, chakras and reading energies. Using crystals for the different healing properties they hold, has been a practice for thousands of years.

Getting back in touch with our ancient human roots and bringing the Earths powerful properties into our daily life is a beautiful habit to get into. Giving healing crystals as a gift is a beautiful way to show someone you care. If you have a friend with back problems then pick them up a Black Onyx crystal. Or a friend with frequent headaches could benefit from the healing properties of Amethyst.

This is an extremely thoughtful gift. Whether the recipient is a true believer or not there is no doubt they will appreciate the sentiment. And who knows you may open them up to new beliefs which is the gift of a lifetime.

For the Body

Yoga Classes

This is a great gift for anyone in your life who you know would like to try yoga. Purchase classes for you and a friend, partner or family member so you can enjoy a new experience together.

Sad light

Anyone feeling the effects of the long dark winter days or lives in the north will appreciate a sad light. This may be something that not many people would get for themselves but certainly can help improve quality of life. Try it out for a friend who works in a dark office or doesn’t get a lot of winter sun. Maybe even try it for yourself?

Yoga retreat

Just like a meditation retreat giving the gift of a yoga retreat is the perfect gift for your yogi friend. Or yourself! Take a weekend away to relax, take care of your body and learn all about this ancient practice!

Tea defuser & calming tea

Tea is obviously the best gift you can give to a tea drinker, take it from me! I love tea and tea accessories. Head to your local tea shop and ask the experts for a de-stressing and calming tea. Great for any tea drinker or aspiring tea drinker.

For the Home

Fuzzy blankets

I am obsessed with fuzzy blankets and whenever I give one as a gift I get the best kind of response. I mean who doesn’t love a new throw for the couch to cuddle up in during winter?

Insense or Sage & burner

People have been burning sage as a way to cleanse and smudge negative energy for thousands of years. Lighting incense is a great way to get ready to meditate or relax when you are at home and also clear the room of negative energies that may be clinging to you or inside your home.

This isn’t spooky witchcraft, rather using sage and incense can be a very relaxing and beneficial addition to any home.

Candles

Being someone who personally loves the ambiance and the warm scents of seasonal candles I have to admit that receiving candles as a gift is a real treat. Having candles in your home can help create the cozy and relaxing atmosphere we all deserve to come home too.

Houseplants

Houseplants help purify the air in our homes, they liven up the look in any room and have even been proven to improve peoples moods. Imagine that?

Giving the gift of an easy to manage plant, like a succulent or fern is a great gift. Something for the owner to care for and watch grow, a gift that keeps on giving.

Personalized print

Personalized photos or prints are not only the best way to preserve happy memories but they also, in my opinion, make the very best gifts!

My best friend still has the photo I gave her 10 years ago of us at our grade 9 graduation. My dad loves the collage I made him of pictures of us on Christmas throughout the years. If there was a fire in my home you better believe the first thing I would grab would be my travel paintings that hang on all my walls.

With the new age of technology, many people are forgetting the importance of printing photos and filling their homes with them. This is beginning to change with more creative and affordable options for “art”. Including the canvas prints and murals available at photowall.com.

To use a site like photowall.com is easy and allows you to create a truly memorable gift for that special someone on your list. Adding some personalized art to a home or office. Simply upload your own image and order either a canvas or a huge wall mural to be custom made and it will be shipped right to you.

My suggestion for making the most out of this gift is getting a custom print from the awesome folks at photowall.com. I was able to forever relive my happy travel memories of wandering the streets of Amsterdam by having a photo I took there transformed into a beautiful canvas.

The quality of the canvas and the frame are superior to anything I have seen in stores such as Costco or IKEA. It was quickly delivered and the assembly of the canvas to the frame was easy. With tools that are durable and sturdy. This is a product that will honestly last you a lifetime or can be passed down through the generations. A welcome sign as many similar products bought at retail stores is often cheaply made and easy to break.

The best news of all is the awesome folks at photowall.com are offering my readers a %20 discount on purchases valid until January 31st, 2018. As a little gift to you all!

Transform an entire room by creating a mural accent wall or give the gift of happy memories with a beautiful personalized canvas!

I love ALL of these so much, but the one I recommend the most is a good planner. I live and die by my planner. It really does save your sanity.

I feel ya! I love my planner too. Is it weird I can’t wait for the New Year so I can start all my new goals and plans?

These are all awesome gifts and I also think we need to treat ourselves! For years I’ve been trying to get my family to just have get-togethers and eat great food and just visit instead of dealing with presents. Everyone needs to take care of themselves.

I have been thinking of trying a medication camp. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and now that my kids are grown, and I have more time for myself, i think I need to just do it.

A lovely gift idea. I feel that everyone has to focus on self care. Last year I didn’t give a hoot about my own life and I found I had to find the inner peace with my sadness and anger to find a way to give myself the self care I needed.
