About Writing

How did you start Scale it Simple/your blog?

I first thought about what kind of blog I wanted to create. After deciding I wasn’t really in it for the money I settled on a free WordPress account.

I was nervous to start and had no idea what I wanted to write about. Until my aunt asked me to document her birthday one year where she performed random acts of kindness. I started there with my free WordPress account and the rest is history.

What made you decide to begin blogging?

I loved writing when I was younger. I would journal and write stories I had made up all the time, but as I got older I kind of lost my way. However, the passion was still there. I thought about blogging for awhile but I never saw myself as a blogger, (I still don’t) and I was very critical and self-conscious of other people knowing my thoughts and opinions.

I finally began because I knew this was the best way to practice my passion and try something new. I had no idea that years later I would still be doing it and loving it as much as I do.

Are there other types of writing you enjoy doing?

I love writing stories and journaling, just like when I was a kid. I have written a few rough copies of books and last year I participated in NaNoWriMo. I plan on taking part again this year. Creative writing is another passion for sure!

Why do you write?

I write because I love to do it! I find writing has always been the most effective way for me to put togeather my thoughts and decipher my feelings. I also love opening my mind and just seeing what flows out as I write, creatively it is a lot of fun.

Do you see yourself as an optimist, pessimist, or neither?

My first reaction is usually pretty pessimistic, then after some reflection, I become optimistic while still often holding onto the pessimism. Something I have been working on.

I guess I consider myself a realist, but often what is real for me is not what it is real for others. It’s all about finding that balance.

Leader or follower?17332529_837356076426863_8567038353273257984_n

Leader all the way, sometimes to a fault. Having a leader personality often can make others feel intimidated or feel like their opinions don’t matter. Apparently, there is a fine line between bossy and leadership. I am still figuring it all out.

Talker or listener?

If I am uncomfortable in a group or around people I don’t know I won’t say much of anything but in my close personal relationships, I am definitely a talker.

Broad-minded or opinionated?

Oddly enough I think I am opinionated about being broadminded? Something that bothers me is when people refuse to change or acknowledge others for their differences. I often can’t just sit by and say nothing if someone is holding such a closed view because that is something I try to stay so mindful of in my own life.

Introvert or extrovert?

Introvert! I struggled with this realization for much of my life, in an extroverted society, it can be difficult for people to accept introverts. People sometimes think you are snobbish, shy, rude or even bitchy if you don’t display a bubbly “normal” personality.

Since owning who I am I find others are inspired to be who they are around me which makes me feel great. Researching more into what my Myers-Briggs personality type is has also been a great help. I am an INFJ by the way.

Type A or Type B?

I guess I am a type A. Meaning I like to have a plan for everything and I become really thrown off is if things go outside of that plan. I am however working on being more go with the flow because let’s face it nothing goes according to plan.

What’s your next adventure?

Italy! Currently, my plan is to spend 3 weeks in Rome next spring. We are thinking of renting an apartment in Rome and then maybe visit a few other cities from there. It has long been a dream of mine to go to Rome., so this is a huge bucket list item for me!

Stephanie, what’s your favorite place in the world to be?

I think my favorite place in the world to be is our cabin. It is so relaxing and quiet I look forward to time spent there in the summer just relaxing in nature.

If you could live anywhere in the world for 3-6 months where and why?

London! I have thought about moving to London often over the past few years. My main reasons being…

They speak English, it is Europe and I freaking love Europe, the weather is better than Newfoundland (believe it or not), it is cheaper to travel to other places in Europe from there, the art and history. Also, the way I see it is my chances of getting my delayed letter to Hogwarts may increase if I am closer, you know what I am saying?

Beach vacation or mountain retreat?

I think both would be amazing, However, I am more of a mountain retreat kind of gal, I love being secluded in nature, just thinking about it makes me feel good.

What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?

Paris! There is a reason it is one of the most visited places in the world. When I traveled there a few years ago with one of my best friends I did not know then that those memories would be some of the best in my life.

I will be going back one day for sure!

Mindfulness and Happiness

I loved your post about self-care in the morning so what do you do in the evening to ensure you’re in the swing of self-care and feeling super duper mindful?

I thought long and hard about this one and I have decided that I will post a full self-care night time routine soon. I really enjoyed writing my morning self-care routine, which you can check out in the meantime here.

How do you keep yourself mindful on a daily basis?

It is difficult to stay mindful every second of the day that is why meditation is an awesome practice. I try to meditate daily, this helps me stay mindful in the moment by building on my brain’s ability to remain aware and recognize my actions and feelings as they arise.17077325_1248992318482654_9102500971266703360_n

How do you inject happiness into those days when you’re not feeling as positive as you’d like to?

Two main ways.

1. I spend time alone. I get a bath, read a book, meditate, give myself a facial, have a nap and just rest.

2. I meet a friend. I will talk, laugh and vent with a friend maybe grab a coffee and a yummy cookie.

Knowing when and how to take care of myself gives my mind the right environment for positive feelings to grow.

For Fun

What is your favorite time of day?

From around 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This is the time of day when everything is done and it is time to put my comfy clothes on and relax.

What is your most embarrassing/funny story?

On an overnight flight from Montreal to Belgium, we noticed that there were a lot of Orthodox Jewish people on our flight. Their clothing and beards attracted my awareness to them because I have never seen someone dressed that way before. I couldn’t help but stare just a little, and of course, I had to do a quick google search to learn a bit more.

On the flight in the middle of the night, I woke up from a nap and decided to go to the bathroom. It was dark on the plane and I was pretty groggy so I must have forgotten to lock the door because a few moments later the door opened and one of the Jewish passengers who was sitting near me was standing looking shocked and in horror on the other side of the opened door.

As quickly as I saw his face he shut the door and ran away. I sat on the toilet laughing for the next 10 minutes. I know that all he saw was an exposed kneecap, but the look of horror on his face was too much or me to handle as bad as that may sound.

From what I had learned earlier through my google search I knew that seeing a woman like that in a bathroom had to be a pretty big no-no.

When I returned to my seat he was in some kind of deep prayer for the next 2 hours. I am not even exaggerating, although it is impossible to determine if that was the reason why.

Don’t get me wrong I have the utmost respect for all religions and beliefs but I mean that was hilarious and embarrassing. I still laugh and shake my head when I remember his face.

What do you see when you walk into a room full of strangers and then how do you proceed?

I guess it would depend on why I was in a room full of strangers. Usually, I would observe the room, and see if I know anyone. Then I would look for something to occupy myself with so I am not awkwardly just standing there. I guess some people would begin to engage in some kind of conversation but I am too shy for that. I usually wait for someone to start talking to me. Impressive I know.

The world ends in 48 hours and you’ve lost your bucket list. What two things would you like to do?

I would like to say something crazy and exciting but knowing me I would probably be having a panic attack for the first 24 hours. So with my remaining time, I would eat a bunch of yummy food and spend time with my loved ones. Probably get drunk on some hard liquor or something and wait for the end.

If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

The Dalia Lama. He is the most inspirational person to me and I would love to ask him lots of questions about life and what he thinks it all means.

McDonalds or BK?

McDonald’s, those nuggets tho. Yum.

What is your dream job?

I would love to be a writer. Not a famous one, just be able to make enough money that I could do just that. Sit in a cool mysterious cabin and write and drink coffee all day.

Do you have any pets?13220910_10156942975655051_2660637643142934740_n

No, I wish. I love animals especially dogs and I am hoping to get an English Setter or a Gordon Setter in the next few years.

What’s the first song that comes to your mind right now?

FleetwoodMac – The Chain

What book(s) have made you cry?

Anne Frank The Diary of a Young Girl makes me uncontrollably cry.

What’s your favorite tv show?

I am a binge watcher so I have a few favorites. Here are a few of my favs so far this year.

  • Big Brother Canada
  • Stranger things

      1. I do have a few ideas. I plan on taking some time this summer to think of a good outline and some characters. Last year I had no idea and just jumped in, which was lots of fun but it would be better to have things a little more developed.

  1. “Opinionated about being broad-minded”–I’m totally the same way! I get so frustrated when people aren’t open to other ideas or even dialogue about a subject! And I LOVE Myers-Briggs, I’m an ENFP 🙂

    1. When I discovered Myers Briggs it changed the way I view myself and others in big ways. There has been so much research it is great to learn how others have dealt with similar things, whether introverted or extroverted.

  3. Enjoyed your post a lot! Usually people are awkward when writing about themselves (you cannot imagine how long it took me to produce an acceptable About page on my blog) but that’s not your case! You are telling your personal stories and dreams in such a light, easily-readable manner that this post can really work as an inspiration for shy introverts! Thank you a lot!

  4. This was super fun to read. Your in-flight story sounds so embarrassing, but so very funny! I love quiet time in nature, too. And I’m so glad you’re passionate about writing, it shows!
